Today for my folding experiment, I chose cut pleats. The most exciting part of cut pleats is that the back of the paper moves to the front when folded. So today, I covered a sheet of paper with charcoal and then began the folding process. I divided the sheet into 16 sections vertically and horizontally.… Continue reading Inside out

Origami With Charcoal
I read a list of origami rules once that had, “Wash your hands,” as the first rule. So I decided to fold with charcoal on my hands.
Composition-004
The collage was created from patterned papers that were printed on gelli plates with high flow acrylic ink.
Paper Folding
Crumpling is a technique where the paper is crumpled, unfolded and crumpled again and again. It creates an interesting texture that results from the thousands of folds. What do you think about it?
Origami and Charcoal #002
Folding paper with dirty hands is so much fun. I am sure this is going to be a thing with me. There are several ways that I am considering exploring this process. Notice that the background has smudges. I did my folding with two pieces of paper. One to fold and one on the table.… Continue reading Origami and Charcoal #002
Doodle Process
Here is a glimpse into the process of creating Post-it-doodle-a-day from 5 February thru 8 May 2016. These doodles were created digitally with an app called ProCreate on an iPad with the Apple Pencil. The process videos are built into the program. It is a long video but I think you will find it interesting… Continue reading Doodle Process
Pleated Round Box
Pleated box from BYU-Idaho Art Dept on Vimeo. I have Complete Pleats written by Paul Jackson. On page 159 there is a beautiful round pleated box designed by Philip Campbel-Bell. I have tried to make it before and thought I would give it another try. To my surprise it worked out beautifully.
Dirty Hands
Dirty Hands from BYU-Idaho Art Dept on Vimeo. I read once on an origami page to always wash your hands. Then this morning as I was considering what to fold it occurred to me that dirty hands might just make folding more visual. Boths sides of the paper turned out very different. I enjoyed discovering… Continue reading Dirty Hands
Module 003
Module 003 | It takes 12 modules to make a sphere. The sphere is very light and is about the size of a softball. The module has 5 arms. I created one arm and then rotated it 72° around a center point to create the module shown below. Module 003 | All 12 modules are cut from… Continue reading Module 003

Paper Module | 001
Module 001 | I have made paper spheres using square modules, but I wondered what would happen if the modules were rectangular. I was able to make a sphere with a rectangular module as shown in the image above. It takes 30 modules to create a sphere as shown above. Module 01 | the proportion of a small playing… Continue reading Paper Module | 001

It was fun to see many good friends and students. This is one of the pieces that I entered. It is a modular painting on wood cubes. It… Continue reading BYU-Idaho Art Department Faculty Show 2015

Paper folding 2
I have attempted to fold this pattern several times and today I finally succeeded. This is the fold that is featured on the front of Paul Jackson’s book, Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form. It is amazing and magical to hold and play with. It has taken some time to figure out how… Continue reading Paper folding 2
Paper folding
Folding paper has become a bit of a hobby for me. I found a wonderful book Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form. I have considered myself a 2D artist but this book has opened a lot of interesting possibilities for me. Folding the paper is a delicious experience in touch. If you have… Continue reading Paper folding
A Birthday Card for my Surgeon
It has been a few years and now everything is OK so I can share this project. Without the gory details I found myself in need of a total colectomy. It isn’t a surgery that I looked forward to but I did want to have a life. When my surgeon Dr. Sklow (highly recommended) met… Continue reading A Birthday Card for my Surgeon
SkillShare class
I just finished taking a micro class from Brad Woodard on skillshare.com. I learned a few really cool tricks and had a good time. The project was to illustrate the word quiet or loud. I picked quiet. There was a baby in the image but it was a bit difficult to look at. I will… Continue reading SkillShare class
Sunflowers on a warm pink day
Armed with fabric from Spoonflower.com and a bit of desire here is a new tie for a sweet summer day. It would be perfect with lemon aid and a shaded hammock. I have been scared of the sewing machine ever since my mother told me tales of needles through fingers when I was small and… Continue reading Sunflowers on a warm pink day

ABCD Fishies?

I had a great day in class today. It was great to see the students work and see great potential. I have a really great bunch of students this semester. The trees were covered in frost crystals
On my way to work this morning all the trees and grass were covered with white frost crystals. It was beautiful. Art-i-fact #011013v01 The frost crystals on the trees inspired me to try a pattern for todays art-i-fact. There is not much frost but it was beautiful. There is a beauty in the bare branches… Continue reading The trees were covered in frost crystals
An art-i-fact for the first day of school
Today was the first day of classes so my artifact for the day is my syllabus for the identity design class. Sometimes you just do whatever it takes. Artifact #005 Just in case you are interested it was a good first day of class. I am looking forward to the semester.
Art-i-fact #004
Tidy Messiness. Thank you Mike Laughead for that accurate description of my work. At least I hope it is a good thing to say about my work. Art-i-fact #004
Art-i-fact #003
Today the Art-i-fact is more painterly and maybe a bit clownish. Art-i-fact #003 I once talked to a bow-tie-wearing gentleman that told me that he always wanted to be sure that his bow ties didn’t look “clownish.” Since then I have been concerned about the same thing. For today I took the liberty to go… Continue reading Art-i-fact #003
Art-i-fact #002
Two days in a row and the second Art-i-fact of the year. It feels good to make images. I have found that my head is filled with ideas, but they are not in a visual form. The only way I can see what I am thinking is to make work. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.… Continue reading Art-i-fact #002
First post of 2013
Welcome to 2013. Like many of you I have some New Year’s resolutions. One of mine is to create something “art-i-fact” every day. For today I have created a pattern called titled the very imaginative name, Pattern #001-2013. Art-i-fact #001 I have applied the pattern to a bow tie because I am in need of… Continue reading First post of 2013
Back to School
Back to School | This past month I started taking a class from Camp Pikaland | The Sellable Sketch, taught by Michelle Fifis of Pattern Observer and have discovered a few things that should have been second nature to me but for some reason didn’t click until Michelle pointed them out. I have had hopes… Continue reading Back to School
Grumpy type
I really can’t help it. I was born this way. Please don’t take it personal, the furrowed brow is genetic.
There comes a point

A Drip at a Time
I have learned a lot from examining the HTML/CSS code from my blogger template and then changing it one parameter at a time. I opened and copied the source code in my browser and pasted it into Dreamweaver. This allowed me to make changes in Dreamweaver. Then I copied the code and pasted back into… Continue reading A Drip at a Time
Learning CSS
I have been asked what resources I am using to learn CSS. A Lynda.com membership is the main source and has been very helpful. The process has been really frustrating because there is so much basic CSS knowledge that you need before any of it makes sense. I watched the Dreamweaver CS4 videos several times… Continue reading Learning CSS
I am just trying
As you may notice my blog is in various forms of disarray. I am trying to learn how to customize it with css. Please be patient with me. Who knows, it might just be interesting to watch me fumble around.
