I can finish

What is up with the Post-it Drawings?

One of my favorite post-it drawings.

Have you ever felt like you just were not making enough progress in your life? Of course, I have or I would not be asking the question.

There were times when I would lay awake in my bed wondering why I felt like I could not getting anything done. After a while, I discovered that this feeling corresponded with times when I was not creating. One solution I found was drawing. I would get a stack of paper and a pen, sit down at the kitchen table and draw. Drawing was good therapy for me and it helped me discover that I needed to have finishes. I needed to cross the finish line.

I needed to have finishes. I needed to cross the finish line.

There is something about finishing, that made everything else in my life, seem more manageable. That is when I started an activity of completing a drawing a day. I did the drawings on 3×3 inch Post-it notes. I chose Post-it notes because they were not precious or expensive. I also gave myself permission to make a bad drawing. When the drawings were finished I posted them to Instagram @scott_franson to feel a bit of accountability.

That was over 300 drawings ago. It feels so good for me to finish. While I do not finish one every day I always make time for one if I start to feel a lack of accomplishment in my day-to-day life. One of the drawings by itself is not really that great, however, 300 of them together is a pretty good accomplishment.

I discovered that small finishes gave me energy and faith to start something big.

I am starting a new online design school. ArtBasics.online will be a place where I can share what I have learned after nearly a quarter of a century as a university design educator. Stop by and sign up for a class.
